My Favorite  Review by  ['Rooster']

Coffee’s OK. I like it. But, I love tea, a strong tea. I’ve tried all of Murchie’s strong teas. This is simply the best. I drink it black, all day long, 3-5 cups a day. Sometimes I mix it up, drinking a different strong tea, but I always come back to Irish Breakfast.

Irish Breakfast Tea - great eye-opener  Review by  ['DavidW']

I absolutely love this tea. Bought it from Murchie's years ago (when it was more affordable) and have been hooked ever since. Now that I live in the US, I still do mail/internet orders from them because the product is the best. I still have a fair amount of inventory in sealed glass decanters and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea. Keep up the good work, Murchie's!

Straight talk/Irish Breakfast  Review by  Straight talk

IRISH BREAKFAST (loose leaf): This tea is very good if you like to use Cream/milk, and, Sugar. It is a very stringent tea--it's a nice, masculine, strong cup of tea. It doesn't smell like hay, or taste malty, or flowery. There is nothing to distract the drinker. It's just a very straight-forward, full, plain, and very strong cup of tea-- it is never bitter.

My absolute favourite  Review by  Emmy

There is not a day that goes by that I don't have at least one cup of this wonderful tea. I'm an avid tea drinker but this is my staple. I enjoy it with a heavy milk/cream but just a little. And a tiny bit of maple syrup. Amazing!

Delicious!  Review by  Mari - Puerto Rican Tea Lover

I became a serious tea drinker fairly recently, and black teas are my favorite. I like them strong, bold, and as dark as possible. If that fits your taste, you have to try this Irish Breakfast. I like it with milk and raw honey. Best way to begin the day!

Love this tea  Review by  MGS

Murchie's Irish Breakfast is my favourite tea. It's exactly as malty and astringent as one would want a breakfast tea to be - a nice bold flavour with some depth. I've tried many breakfast teas, and this is the one that I have settled upon for drinking at home.

Agreed - the best  Review by  Gabuela

I discovered long ago that I love the addition of Assam that goes into Irish Breakfast blends. I get it whenever I can and my special treat, for eiather a great day or one that needs help, is tea made with loose Irish breakfast tea. I have tried many and it is true that Murchie's is best. I am reminded of people enjoying an exquisite wine or scotch, eyes close and one is amazed at the beautiful flavor they are enjoying.

No Substitute!  Review by  Sarah - Murchie's Team Member

I've spent the last two weeks trying different breakfast / morning teas and can confirm that the Irish is my favourite. Nothing else can match this standard! I love a good black tea with milk, and this one is smooth and robust without being bitter or biting.

Gem of Black Teas  Review by  Tea Maven

I have sampled a wide selection of teas over the last 25 years and always come back to Irish Breakfast as my constant. I have tried versions from various retailers; however, they do not compare to Murchies quality. I love the strength and smooth full-bodied flavour of this classic tea. I like to watch the color develop as it brews from a golden hue to that deep, rich mahogany dark brown. I agree with the previous review in that the aroma is not distracting. Enjoy a cup.

Breakfast of Champions  Review by  Eleanor - Murchie's Team Member

Being a black tea/orange pekoe fan, I have struggled to find black teas with the right blends to suit my likes. When I tried the Irish Breakfast, I was pleasantly surprised at the strength and the fact that it wasn't overly "florally" or fragranted, which I personally find distracting when drinking a tea like this. Awesome with or without milk and sugar and is a great way to wake up for classic orange pekoe drinkers looking for something a bit different and higher quality in the morning

Standardized cupping technique and vessel for tasting tea General guidelines on steeping different kinds of tea

Steeping the Best (Guide)

Different types of teas should be steeped according to certain times and water temperatures to bring out their best flavours. Use this guide as a starting point, and then experiment until you find the perfect brewing method for your favourite tea.

Based on approximately one level teaspoon (2.5 g) of loose tea or one tea bag per 6-8 ounce (180-240 mL) cup. For stronger flavour, add more tea. Brewing for longer may increase the strength of the tea, but will likely also cause bitterness.

Tea Bags vs. Loose Tea

While our tea bags and loose tea are crafted to match the same flavour profile, there are discernable effects between the two formats. Namely, the leaves inside tea bags is milled, making it much finer and a quicker brew, while loose tea can take a couple minutes longer to steep. Tea bags are very convenient, but loose tea can be more visually appealing and brewed with a reusable infuser.

  1. Tea bags: steep for 3 - 4 minutes
  2. Loose tea: steep for 4 - 5 minutes

General Steeping Temperatures

The table included here shows some general guidelines for steeping different kinds of tea. Be mindful that some teas, even two from the same category, will brew differently than others. In particular, our green-black blends will often have different ratios of green and black teas - the more green-leaning ones should be brewed at a lower temperature range. Experimentation is highly encouraged, as tea is very much a matter of personal taste.

Puerh and oolong teas are often steeped multiple times for a shorter period of time in smaller brewing vessels. This method creates a curious exploration of the tea as it unfurls, developing new flavours with each subsequent brew - often making for great social conversation.

If you're unsure, try steeping in the middle range for your tea type. If the result is too bitter, steep at a lower temperature or for a shorter time. If the result is flat, try a higher temperature.
