May 20: Canada Post Strike Imminent
Affects PO Boxes (USA included), Apartments, Rural Areas
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers intends to begin strike action on May 23. This affects all national deliveries using Canada Post, as well as American PO box addresses.
As described by the strike notice here, Canada Post services are shut down during this national strike. We anticipate that this will affect packages with special delivery requirements, primarily PO boxes (can only be delivered by the postal service), apartment buildings (when no buzzer number is provided), and remote locations to which other delivery services will not deliver (rural routes or etc.).
Murchie's is unable to provide estimates about this strike action, nor can we ensure a timely package delivery to addresses that require us to use Canada Post. Please expect some delays regardless of the courier used to deliver your package; there is increased shipping demand as a result of these union actions. Our alternative couriers primarily deliver to densely populated addresses, and as such, we must take several steps to check whether or not your package can be shipped. We do not have contracts with all carriers, so unavailability of service should be expected.
What can I do about my package delivery?
If you have already placed an order with a special shipping address as described above, no action can be taken to have your package delivered sooner, nor can it be rerouted for second delivery by another of our couriers if it has been picked up by Canada Post already (last Canada Post orders were sent May 13). We apologize for the inconvenience if there is a delay. Our receptionists can only check the tracking number provided to you when your package is processed for shipment. Canada Post has said that packages in the system will be secured but not delivered until the strike is over.
Otherwise, please take the following action(s):
- PO Boxes (includes US orders): Please expect delays for your PO box delivery. New PO box orders will not be shipping until the strike is over unless you contact us at order@murchies.com and provide a valid alternative address.
- Apartment addresses: Please include your buzzer number so your package can be brought in; only Canada Post has apartment building access otherwise. Your package will be held until we receive clarification about your buzzer number or concierge.
- Rural Routes / Maritime Provinces / Territories / Postal Codes with Zeroes in First 3 Characters: Please expect delays. Rural addresses may not be deliverable - if so, we will hold your package at our facility until we are able to ship it.
Why does this affect US PO Boxes?
To ensure that your PO box can be delivered to, we ship international orders arriving to a PO box with Canada Post. These deliveries are handed over to USPS upon arriving at the border. While some couriers can work with post offices to deliver to a PO box, it is a common issue that the delivery cannot be completed, so we only ship these orders via Canada Post.
