A beautiful balance   Review by  Michelle Butler Hallett

1 bag for 250mL water 100C, steeped 4 minutes 15 seconds, drunk bare. Dry tea bag aroma: coppery Ceylon and faintest pepper. Liquor: copper. not much fragrance beyond wet earth. Oh. Oh oh oh, this is good, gorgeously balanced: Assam giving malt, heft, and body, Ceylon being all coppery bright, Darjeeling making that even brighter, with just the finestest peppery bite of Yunnan. No bitterness. Despite not being aromatic, this is a delicous blend.

This wonderful tea saved me!  Review by  Leesa

This wonderful tea saved me when stranded in the middle of a storm on the West Coast Trail. I am a true tea granny and don't usually have my tea without milk but given the circumstances I had to drink it black and this tea was so tasteful and not bitter tasting at all. Thank you Murchie's for this lovely alternative to my usual standard black tea. I enjoy it often as a treat.

My favourite!  Review by  Myra

I've been drinking this blend for a few years now, since getting the small 10-bag sampler. A touch bolder than the Golden Jubilee blend, but a very lovely breakfast or mid-afternoon-break tea nonetheless. I add a bit of milk and honey. Since moving away from Victoria, I'm very glad I can buy this online!

Perfect black tea blend  Review by  tally

This is a great blend -- to me, it tastes like the quintessential black tea. It has a neutrality yet depth of flavor, and isn't at all bitter, tannic, or harsh. I think it makes a perfect cup of light-to-medium black tea, and it wears well, making it great for both every day use and special occasion. We love it!

My daughter gave me this tea as a thank you gift and I love it. It is even better than the Murchie's Afternoon Blend Tea and that tea is stellar!

An Excellent Tea  Review by  railbird

I bought a tin of this tea to try it and am very pleasantly surprised. My husband, who never varies in his tea, is extremely impressed with this tea. It is well worth the price paid. We will definitely purchase it again.

Standardized cupping technique and vessel for tasting tea General guidelines on steeping different kinds of tea

Steeping the Best (Guide)

Different types of teas should be steeped according to certain times and water temperatures to bring out their best flavours. Use this guide as a starting point, and then experiment until you find the perfect brewing method for your favourite tea.

Based on approximately one level teaspoon (2.5 g) of loose tea or one tea bag per 6-8 ounce (180-240 mL) cup. For stronger flavour, add more tea. Brewing for longer may increase the strength of the tea, but will likely also cause bitterness.

Tea Bags vs. Loose Tea

While our tea bags and loose tea are crafted to match the same flavour profile, there are discernable effects between the two formats. Namely, the leaves inside tea bags is milled, making it much finer and a quicker brew, while loose tea can take a couple minutes longer to steep. Tea bags are very convenient, but loose tea can be more visually appealing and brewed with a reusable infuser.

  1. Tea bags: steep for 3 - 4 minutes
  2. Loose tea: steep for 4 - 5 minutes

General Steeping Temperatures

The table included here shows some general guidelines for steeping different kinds of tea. Be mindful that some teas, even two from the same category, will brew differently than others. In particular, our green-black blends will often have different ratios of green and black teas - the more green-leaning ones should be brewed at a lower temperature range. Experimentation is highly encouraged, as tea is very much a matter of personal taste.

Puerh and oolong teas are often steeped multiple times for a shorter period of time in smaller brewing vessels. This method creates a curious exploration of the tea as it unfurls, developing new flavours with each subsequent brew - often making for great social conversation.

If you're unsure, try steeping in the middle range for your tea type. If the result is too bitter, steep at a lower temperature or for a shorter time. If the result is flat, try a higher temperature.
