A traditional blend of black teas with the essence of aromatic bergamot, Earl Grey is one of the world’s most iconic teas.
The name of this tea is typically attributed to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey and the Prime Minister of United Kingdom from 1830 – 1834. Legend has it he saved the son of a Chinese mandarin and was given the tea as a reward for the heroic deed. According to the "official" record published by Howick Hall, the home of Charles Grey, a Chinese mandarin blended the tea (which contained bergamot) to disguise the taste of lime in the well water of the earl's home; the tea was later served by Lady Grey in London where it received a warm reception.
In an effort to find the true origins of the name "Earl Grey tea", the Oxford English Dictionary invited the public to contribute information on early references to the name. Eager tea lovers found old advertisements dating back to 1884 about an "Earl Grey's Mixture", but it was not until 1928 that Jackson's of Piccadilly claimed that they had blended this tea for a former Earl Grey back in 1836. Despite extensive research, the Oxford English Dictionary was unable to find conclusive evidence on when the name "Earl Grey tea" was coined.
Today, Earl Grey tea is a well-loved classic amongst tea connoisseurs and regular drinkers alike. With the addition of Darjeeling and natural bergamot oil, our blend has an extra sparkle: we think you'll agree it's one of the world's best.

This is the best! I was so delighted to see the Earl Grey Green Tea surface just a few years back. It is a wonderful afternoon tea for sipping on a cold, wet days or just lounging around. Not bad for mornings, either! Luxurious tea.

I discovered this tea by accident when I visited British Columbia in the 1990's. It's been shipped to my home in California for over 20 years! I never found anything close to the quality and taste of this blend so I stopped looking. Why ignore perfection?

A coworker gave me a box of your Earl Grey. The fragrance is remarkable but the moment I tasted it I knew it was the most superb tea I had ever enjoyed. I have been consuming their teas for as long as I can ever remember. Murchies tea has been a long time staple in my life of being a tea drinker. It began as a special treat, my dad brought back a bunch of samples from Vancouver BC which then turned into a life long addiction to the brand and the product. I would be lost without these guys. This and all of their other teas I have tried are very special and unique in the tea trade. Their Earl Gray is the absolute tops!

I have sampled several high end Earl Grays over the years and Murchie's is our hand's down blend of choice for ourselves and my mother in law as well. Never get's bitter and has a unique flavour that is strong and mellow at the same time. The fragrance is out of this world!. Definitely on our "comfort foods" list.

Murchie's Earl Grey Tea is the best! The flavour is the best I've found. I like a strong cup of tea and like to steep it a long time but other Earl Grey teas turn bitter if steeped too long. This tea never has a bitter taste, even if I leave the tea bag in my cup the whole time I'm enjoying my tea. The flavour gets stronger but not bitter.

Coffee Ratings
We rate the flavour properties of our coffees along two dimensions: roast and body.
Roast is simply a result of how long and how hot the beans have been roasted, which can be seen in the colour of the finished bean, and typically results in general flavour traits:

Tea Brewing Guide
Different types of teas should be brewed according to certain times and water temperatures to bring out their best flavours. Use this guide as a starting point, and then experiment until you find the perfect brewing method for your favourite tea.
Based on approximately one level teaspoon (2.5g) of loose tea or one tea bag per 6-8 ounce (180-240ml) cup. For stronger flavour, add more tea. Brewing for longer may increase the strength of the tea, but will likely also cause bitterness.

Coffee Brewing Guide
The simplest methods for brewing coffee are drip coffee, pour over and French press. These guidelines are a starting point; modify the ratio of coffee to water, the grind, and brewing time to your taste. If your coffee is not strong enough, increase the proportion of coffee per cup of water, grind the beans finer, or allow them to brew longer – or any combination of these factors. If your coffee is too strong, simply do the opposite.
Drip coffee or pour over method: hot water is gradually poured over coffee grounds and slowly drips through
- Fine to medium grind coffee
- 1.5 to 2.5 tablespoons of coffee per cup of water
- Coarse grind coffee
- 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of coffee per cup (e.g. 4-6 tbsp for a 4-cup French press)
- Pour about 1/3 of the water over the coffee grinds; wait about 30 seconds and then pour in the rest
- Wait 4-5 minutes, then push down the plunger to separate the grounds from finished coffee, and enjoy!
