Murchie's 1894 Select Orange Pekoe Tea is a true cuppa for the tea drinker looking for an Orange Pekoe tea. This tea is a traditional part of early Murchie's blending history as one of our original blends, and as part of the history of British Columbia.

The Port of New Westminster and Murchie's Tea & Coffee have a combined history, dating back to 1894, when John Murchie started blending teas in the burgeoning city. The port's early days are depicted in an artist's rendering on the packaging of this fine, flavourful tea to illustrate this part of our history.

Love this tea as an iced tea base! Perfect for summer, and mixes well with lemonade for a half and half. Delicious.

The way Orange Pekoe should taste!  Review by  Nicholette

I had my first cup or orange pekoe when I was 5 and I was addicted! It was a popular supermarket brand whos taste and quality diminished over the years. When I actually took the time to think about what I was drinking I knew it didn't taste like my first cup. I've spent a very long time looking for a quality cup and was dissapointed until now. Thank you Murchie's, for bringing back the taste of tea to me!

A Surprising Find  Review by  ['tea maven ']

I was sent an assortment of teas as a gift. Being a bit of a Tea snob, I waited to taste this tea until all the other tins were finished. And I was totally surprised at the great taste this 1894 had. Nothing like the supermarket Orange Pekoe that give tea a bad name. So I am online ordering some to be shipped to U.S.

Enjoyable throughout the day   Review by  Jerry

It is no secret that Murchie’s creates and produces some of the most drinkable and well-crafted teas (and coffee) on the market. Although I find it impossible to choose a favorite, this 1894 blend is among my top tier. I brew it strong, add a few drops of milk and thoroughly enjoy a world class cuppa. 1894 is great at breakfast or for a mid afternoon tea break. Highly recommended of course!

Bracing, strong eye-opener  Review by  MPC

I like a strong tea in the morning with milk. 1894 has a nice, bracing bite to it, and it takes milk well. This tea just tastes the way that I think tea should taste. It isn't timid; it's bright and assertive without being harsh. I like it to start the day, but I can see how on certain days, it would be perfect for an afternoon jolt back to life. Someone else praised its beer-like qualities. I am not a beer fan, but I can see that there is a depth and character to 1894 that is similar to beer, but obviously, the profile is more subtle than that. Overall, this is an excellent black tea. I would recommend it.

English Breakfast Alternative  Review by  Joy

I have been drinking English Breakfast tea in the morning for years and several years ago was introduced to Murchie's. A year ago this Texan had an opportunity to visit Victoria and the Murchie's shop there. I asked about an alternative to English Breakfast that would give me a little more zing for the morning. The associate suggested 1894 Select, and I've been drinking it since and loving it. Laura likes it for the afternoon, and I'm sure it's good then -- but it's a wonderful day-starter, too. Laura commented that she thought it would fare well with milk. I drink it with milk, and it fares very well.

THE Orange Pekoe  Review by  Laura - Murchie's Team Member

When I started at Murchie's, I fully admit I was a tea neophite, raised on mediocre drug store teas. So, when it came to trying something that I thought I knew what it should taste like, I waited a while. Then a few months ago, I had my first cup of 1894. What an amazing brew! A beautiful amber colouring, and a smooth, yet malty flavour. I had it without milk, but it would probably fare really well with milk as well. I highly suggest this one for someon looking for a great afternoon tea with some depth to it.

Flavour Profile Guide

Tea and coffee tasting is a very individual, multi-dimensional experience: one person’s perfect cup can be too strong or weak, too brisk or watery for the next person. At Murchie’s, we believe that the best tea or coffee is the one that YOU like the best! We use the following flavour profile guides to help compare our teas and coffees within a relative scale.

Tea Strength Ratings

This rating method indicates the strength of flavour each tea has when brewed according to our brewing guide.

RATING

RATING PROFILE
Light/Delicate Tea | Murchie's Tea & Coffee              Light/Delicate: Very light in colour and delicate in flavour
Medium Tea | Murchie's Tea & Coffee              Medium: Medium-light cup with slightly fuller cup
Medium-Strong Tea | Murchie's Tea & Coffee              Medium-Strong: Medium-dark cup, medium body, and full flavour without harshness
Strong Tea | Murchie's Tea & Coffee              Strong: Full body, rich cup, takes milk well
Very Strong Tea | Murchie's Tea & Coffee               Very Strong: Rich, dark cup with very full, strong flavour and briskness

Coffee Ratings

We rate the flavour properties of our coffees along two dimensions: roast and body.

Roast is simply a result of how long and how hot the beans have been roasted, which can be seen in the colour of the finished bean, and typically results in general flavour traits:

Light Roast           More acidity, brightness and a slight pucker
Medium Roast           Slightly richer flavours, some acidity, enhanced creaminess
Dark Roast           Distinctive roasted flavour, sometimes notes of toasted sugar or charcoal

Body is the term used to describe how the brewed coffee feels in your mouth:

Light Body           Easy to drink with little lingering flavour, ‘thin’ or ‘clean’ feeling on the palate
Medium Body           Heavier, creamier mouth-feel with more lingering flavour
Full Body           Rich, full-mouth feeling: hits all of the palate and lingers

Tea Brewing Guide

Different types of teas should be brewed according to certain times and water temperatures to bring out their best flavours. Use this guide as a starting point, and then experiment until you find the perfect brewing method for your favourite tea.

Based on approximately one level teaspoon (2.5g) of loose tea or one tea bag per 6-8 ounce (180-240ml) cup. For stronger flavour, add more tea. Brewing for longer may increase the strength of the tea, but will likely also cause bitterness.

Brew times shown in minutes.

Coffee Brewing Guide

The simplest methods for brewing coffee are drip coffee, pour over and French press. These guidelines are a starting point; modify the ratio of coffee to water, the grind, and brewing time to your taste. If your coffee is not strong enough, increase the proportion of coffee per cup of water, grind the beans finer, or allow them to brew longer – or any combination of these factors. If your coffee is too strong, simply do the opposite.

Drip coffee or pour over method: hot water is gradually poured over coffee grounds and slowly drips through

  • Fine to medium grind coffee
  • 1.5 to 2.5 tablespoons of coffee per cup of water
French press: coffee grounds are ‘steeped’ in hot water, and then a filter presses down the grounds, allowing the finished coffee to be poured off
  • Coarse grind coffee
  • 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of coffee per cup (e.g. 4-6 tbsp for a 4-cup French press)
  • Pour about 1/3 of the water over the coffee grinds; wait about 30 seconds and then pour in the rest
  • Wait 4-5 minutes, then push down the plunger to separate the grounds from finished coffee, and enjoy!
